“USAID Twige Ururimi rw’Amarenga” Launches: A Project for Strengthening Equitable Education for Deaf Learners in Rwanda
Kigali, Rwanda – Juárez & Associates (J&A), in partnership with the Rwanda National Union of the Deaf (RNUD) and AccessEnable, proudly announces the launch of the USAID Twige Ururimi rw’Amarenga (“USAID Let’s Learn Sign Language”) project, a groundbreaking initiative funded by USAID to enhance inclusive education for deaf learners in Rwanda.
The USAID Twige Ururimi rw’Amarenga project reflects USAID’s commitment to advancing equity and self-reliance in education systems, with a focus on improving learning outcomes for marginalized groups. The project seeks to bolster Rwanda’s capacity to deliver high-quality education to deaf children and youth, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and professionally.
Key objectives of the project include:
- Developing Sign Language Resources: Creating standardized Rwandan Sign Language (RSL) instructional materials to support learning for students, educators, and families.
- Capacity Building for Teachers: Training educators and school staff to integrate RSL into classroom settings and promote inclusive learning practices.
- Community Engagement: Increasing awareness and acceptance of deaf education among families, local stakeholders, and the broader community.
- Strengthening Policy Support: Collaborating with the Ministry of Education to align project outcomes with Rwanda’s national education policies.
“Access to education is a fundamental right, and this project ensures that deaf learners in Rwanda have the tools and support they need to thrive,” said Nicandro Juárez, President and CEO at Juárez & Associates. “USAID Twige Ururimi rw’Amarenga represents a critical step toward building a more inclusive and equitable education system in Rwanda.”
RNUD and AccessEnable will play a vital role in delivering culturally relevant and technically sound approaches to implementing the project. Their expertise in advocacy and accessible technology will enhance the project’s impact by fostering collaboration between local schools, government bodies, and civil society organizations.
The USAID Twige Ururimi rw’Amarenga project will engage key stakeholders, including deaf learners, their families, educators, and policymakers, ensuring a sustainable and community-driven approach. Through workshops, pilot programs, and ongoing technical support, the project aims to establish a replicable model for inclusive education that can be scaled nationwide.
